Jeremy and I knew within 10 seconds of Dean and Jennifer walking into our office that they would become clients – and be almost like family… Dean saw our Subaru STI (photos of the car at Red Rock Canyon can be seen by clicking on that link) parked outside of the office and commented on how he is also a “car guy”. And, after an hour or so (the first 30 minutes spent talking about cars!) we were booked for DJ and Photography!
Anyway, to the event! I spent the pre-ceremony time with Jennifer in their top-floor suite overlooking the mountains and golf course. By the way, the Suncoast Hotel and Casino is a great place to have a wedding and reception! Here’s a couple from there:
At the same time, Jeremy was “2nd shooting” with Dean (Kirk, as his friends call him) in the ceremony room. This is one big benefit of having two photographers, and an even bigger benefit of having one female and one male photographer – the groom and groomsmen tend to be a little more “loose” and relaxed. Here’s a compilation we know Dean will love. Keep in mind, Jeremy DID get “formal” shots, but how priceless are these semi-formal moments for a groom?!? Brides love to see these too, because a lot of photographers neglect photos of the groom…
You’ll want to click on this one, just like you can with any of my blog photos, to see a larger version…
Need more convincing that you should have 2 photographers? These two photos were taken at exactly the same second! Jeremy got Jennifer and her dad, and I got Dean and Jason (the best man).
We were also able to take our new toys (the off-camera flashes that I mentioned a few posts back). Jeremy’s camera was wireless to those flashes and I used on-camera during the ceremony. So, look back up at the groomsmen photos, notice the great depth and clarity that we can get with off-camera flash!
And here’s another that Jeremy got, see the almost 3-D effect that the multiple off-camera flashes create?
After the ceremony, it was decided that we’d head down to the pool area for all the “formals”. We were all-for this idea since we knew then we wouldn’t have to do the boring stand-up-straight-in-front-of-the-altar shots… and we knew that Dean and Jennifer weren’t that type of couple!
The problem was, we didn’t have too much time, and even though it is Las Vegas it was COLD outside… so, with the great help of the groomsmen and a couple others, we were able to take all the equipment to the pool for proper lighting (it was dark!). We had to get a few photos on the curved stairway…
And of course we got all the “formals”, but this blog is already getting too long! Here’s one of our “signature” photos…
At the reception… Dean really hammed it up for the Garter Pull!
The above photo was with the off-camera flashes and I can’t say enough how pleased I am with the improvement in quality simply from those flashes! For the heck-of-it, we took two photos within a few seconds of each other. Same camera model, same lens model, but one is on-camera flash, and the other is off-camera flash…
Now, with the new off-camera flashes… both photos are good, but this one is several levels above!
Two more… first my “signature” party-photo:
And, taken around the same time by Jeremy, the “behind the scenes” version (yes, I am laying on the floor in the center of that mob)!
We ended up with a bit over 1100 “keeper” photos for Dean and Jennifer. And, we ended up with some great memories of a super couple! I love being a Photographer in Las Vegas!

Ok, everyone is doing it so I guess I will too! As a Las Vegas Wedding Photographer I have many great memories from 2008. Here’s my Top 5:
Pre-List: It should go without saying that my brides and grooms have made most of my best memories – without exception I’ve been amazed at how COOL my clients are; I seem to attract very laid-back couples – either that or (as I’ve been told) I tend to MAKE them be laid-back and relaxed. Either way, my 2008 Brides and Grooms were AWESOME to work with!
Now for the list:
- Far and away my best photography-related memory for 2008: Working with Autism Speaks. I did a blog about this HERE. For both myself and for Jeremy, this was an amazingly rewarding organization to be involved with.
- Receiving the “Creme de la Creme” (Best of the Best) award from WeddingMBA, the Wedding Merchant’s Business Academy. It’s great to win awards from our bride’s recommendations (like the 2007 Best of Weddings that we won from TheKnot magazine)… but when we were one of only around 20 companies IN THE ENTIRE USA to win this award, it’s a HUGE accomplishment!
- This one may sound funny, but I enjoyed making several of my brides CRY this year. Don’t worry, it’s in a good way… brides almost always get a bit teary-eyed when they come into the office to review their wedding photography! It usually happens right around the “first kiss” photo.
But it does make me feel good that I was able to Capture the Emotion, and help revive that emotion later on! - This one may be a little self-serving but I always very much enjoy seeing positive reviews for my work, whether it’s here on my blog (and you can see recent comments in the right-side margin OR by clicking at the bottom of a post where it says “xx Comments”. I am also proud of all of the 5-Star ratings and great reviews that D. Jay’s Entertainment (and myself, and my photographers) received on multiple online ratings websites, like WeddingWire, OpenList, and Kudzu. In 2008, we became Las Vegas’s Highest-Rated and most Award-Winning DJ and Photography company!
- New contacts – wedding planners and wedding/reception facilities, and being invited to either be EXCLUSIVE, or on their Preferred Vendor list. We are on over 2 DOZEN Preferred Vendor lists, and are exclusive with many Wedding Planners and wedding/reception faclilities. I’m also very proud of the Endorsements that we’ve received at WeddingWire (click link and scroll down just a little bit to see the endorsements)!
2008 has been an amazing year business-wise, and I know my photography has developed (pun intended) greatly this year – at the beginning of the year I decided that I would start being a “Contemporary” photographer… photojournalistic, cutting-edge, with tasteful processing done to my photos. No more “shoot and print”… I have been working on making each of my photos more than just a photo… possibly touching on ‘art’!
Thank you to all of my brides and grooms for a great 2008! And, I’m looking forward to all my new weddings for 2009!

This is the Las Vegas Wedding that I was honored to be involved with as the photographer last weekend. Sheree and Matthew are a great couple, and Sheree was an absolutely beautiful bride. Sheree wanted mostly non-traditional photography so a lot of the photos are basic photojournalistic style.
I did want to show a couple shots that I post-processed to include some new “textures” that I just acquired. As of this writing, Sheree hasn’t even seen them, and to be honest I don’t think they are her “style”, but of course I’m giving her multiple versions of each photo (including the non-textured versions). I was just so excited to try out the textures, though! You get a better effect by clicking on the photos to see the larger version.
This little girl was the flowergirl, I just loved the natural light from the window lighting up her cute little face!
Very very light texture on this, a grainy look…
Sheree with her daughter in a tender moment before the ceremony.
Another one of her daughter, totally fascinated by the flowers…
Now to the ceremony. This is a shot I always do my best to get – the grooms reaction to seeing his bride for the first time. The smiles (and sometimes tears) always make a great memory.
While Matthew was smiling, ringbearer Dalton was somehow surprised by the horseshoe (click to enlarge and see some of the details, including the rings!)
The ceremony was very laid-back, and as I’ve mentioned before, it’s always easy to get great wedding photos when the bride (and groom) have big-ole’ smiles!
We didn’t really do many “formals” after the wedding but I was able to get a few. A very non-traditional pose (usually the bride is in front, but putting her behind the groom “loosens” the photo a bit…and the angle loosens it even further). Fun!
Told you Sheree was fun! They all laughed when I said, “ok, let’s do one in the bounce-house!”. Yes, Sheree, IN YOUR DRESS!
I had a blast shooting this wedding, and the 1000+ photos will create great memories for Matthew and Sheree and their family. I know they had a good time too… they kept Larry, the DJ from D. Jay’s Entertainment, for 2 extra hours! What a party!

“Nothing Traditional or Posed” was my main instruction from Christina. I was able to slip in a few posed shots but all-in-all, this Las Vegas wedding ceremony and reception photography was candid and photojournalistic style.
This wedding and reception was held at Green Valley Ranch in Henderson (in the Las Vegas Valley). Christina was great to hang out with before the ceremony and VERY laid-back. After our introductions, the first thing she said was “here, have a glass of champagne”. I had to decline since champagne tends to effect me very quickly and I doubt any of my brides would want their photographer to be tipsy!
Of course, in blogs, photographers are expected to include creative shots – I did get Christina to do a couple poses:
I’ve posted a few of this style.. the “contemplative” shot. I just ask the Bride to think about her ceremony and her future husband and try to capture their immediate, natural reaction. As always, these shots are interpreted differently by different people…
The other day I was “spying” on some other wedding photographer blogs and realized I have never posted my “shoe shots”. Brides love those photos of their shoes!
Christina said she “used to” play piano but she did end up sitting down and playing a very nice piece. I wanted to incorporate the piano with her bouquet and thought this one captured my intentions:
During the ceremony, with a little bit of a vintage look…
Smoochie, smoochie!
The Recessional, she is SO happy, and he is SO proud!
First dance
D. Jay’s Entertainment provided the Disc Jockey, that’s Ed on the right side getting all the pretty girls to sing to “Summer Nights”. What a ham!

I decided to do one more Flash photo montage, this one is for Cristina and Jason‘s wedding and for all their friends and family all over the world. Cristina emailed me and was SO excited to show her wedding photos to all her family who couldn’t make it to Las Vegas for the Wedding so I thought I’d put 60 or so photos to a montage as a “little extra” for her.
I like this one because it shows highlights of the entire wedding day, and it’s set to their first dance song. Plus, it shows some of the great surroundings at the JW Marriott Las Vegas that I wasn’t able to post in my original blog post (scroll down 2 or 3 posts to see that one)!
