I find myself at Lake Las Vegas more and more often – it’s just such a beautiful place. Another thing I like about it is that I always seem to find a new place to take engagement pictures. On this 2-hour shoot, we got 28 unique poses in over 20 unique locations!
I start off with every couple at the waterfall near the front entrance. The photos start out very basic and usually I don’t even plan on using them – it’s just a way to get the couple accustomed to having their picture taken. But, this one came out pretty nice (albeit pretty standard):
Here’s a pose I use quite often, but try to change it up a little for each couple. Can’t you just feel the emotion?
Towards the end of the shoot, the sun was coming down and I had to attempt a photo that really isn’t good for my camera… as a matter of fact I have to override the “protection” that the camera has that protects the sensor from burning out. It’s slightly dangerous to the camera but the end result is worth it!
We tried to make it to the front entrance again, for a sunset shot from the rusty steel bridge. It was very dark under the trees on the bridge, and we were a little late for the sunset, but it came out nice. For any of my photographer friends out there, I think you’ll agree that this is actually a very difficult shot – getting the natural light of the sunset while still using the flash to illuminate the subjects… all while not allowing the background to be too dark or the subjects get “blown out” by the flash. Either way, this photo marks a great ending to a very fun shoot!

What a great couple! It has been a while since we’ve been to Lake Las Vegas so we were very excited to have a chance to shoot this beautiful couple at this beautiful location.
We spent just under 2 hours, got 120 “keeper” photos and over 20 very unique poses in unique locations/backdrops. Here’s 6 of them:
There’s a great shopping area with a nice pedestrian street. This is one of a series of about 20 photos of them walking up the street doing fun things!
Sarah is absolutely beautiful. On our first consultation, she had mentioned that they were considering getting married in California at a rose garden. So, when we met, we presented the couple with roses and we used the roses in several poses.
Evan ain’t so bad either! We wanted a bit more of a masculine pose for his single photo, this one fits the bill!
As the sun went down, we walked to the waterfront and this was the 2nd shot off the camera. They are naturally loving to each other so it was easy to capture this tender moment.
Evan and Sarah had mentioned there were some friends of theirs who had a shot taken on grass with a certain pose that they really liked. So, we figured we’d try to emulate it. They say “Imitation is the Best Form of Flattery”.
Of course we always have fun on our shoots, I haven’t posted all the series of photos of them dancing on a bridge over the water or as they walked down the brick road… but I just had to post this fun one….
We know Evan and Sarah had fun and were very happy with the photos. Congratulations, you guys! We hope to be joining you in California next year!

It’s difficult to choose a D.J. in Las Vegas. I work with the DJs at D. Jay’s Entertainment on a regular basis and they ALWAYS put on a great show! They keep the party moving without seeming rushed and since we all work together so often, we know the format and what to expect next. That means no missed photos!

Since not all photography is “Las Vegas Photography”, I frequent a lot of message boards for photographers from all over the world where we share our photos and critique each other’s work. Every once in a while I’ll show a photo that my client ABSOLUTELY LOVES, but the pro photogs will absolutely HATE. Usually that’s for very technical reasons…. exposure, flash use, shadows, etc.
Of course, like all Photographers, I strive to take a perfect “technical” picture every time. But sometimes, that just doesn’t happen. What I DO almost always get is the EMOTION… the “moment”. You won’t find me missing a shot because I’m adjusting my flash or the lighting isn’t just right! Photoshop does some amazing things!
Anyway, I was thinking about my personal theory on Photography, as it relates to my work here, for weddings, family, sports, and some portrait photography. I decided that I would write my 5 “goals”, in order, and publicize those goals to my clients and potential clients.
Here goes:
- Capture the “moment” and the “emotion”. This includes helping the client(s) get into a good mindset so I can get good photos (ie. having fun when appropriate!).
- Make sure my client will like (or love) the shot. Consult to find out the client’s styles and wants, but push creative/artistic boundaries. Don’t forget about the “must have” poses/photos.
- Composition/Exposure/Lighting. Understand that good composition (or cropping) and processing can make a mediocre photo/moment into an “OH WOW” photo. While on-location, take a good “technical” shot, but don’t shortchange the client by giving them an unfinished photo! Post Processing can make the difference!
- Run a smooth and organized photoshoot. Especially with group pictures or with the formal photography before/after a wedding ceremony – the family and guests appreciate a photographer who can (nicely) “take charge” and get the pictures done quickly and professionally.
- Quality above quantity. HOWEVER, especially with event photography, most clients do want “candid” or “snapshot” type photos of their friends and family. Not every photo needs to be magazine-quality, but make them magazine-quality when it’s appropriate.
